Author: Katherine Paterson
Genre: Fiction
Level: Middle school
Review:
A young girl named Louise, who everyone calls
Wheeze, has always been in the shadow of her twin sister, Caroline. Growing up
on a small island in a small town just added to her problems. Wheeze is in a
constant battle with herself as she tries to stand out from her perfect sister
and she hopes to eventually get off the island. The author takes the reader
throughout Wheeze's whole life struggle until she finally finds her true
calling as a midwife and finds her soul mate in a small town, ironically
enough. This book is very interesting in how it keeps the reader throughout the
whole book. I was able to deeply feel for Wheeze and relate to her as I was the
oldest of four and always felt like the child with the least attention. While
this book is very say and depressing at times, there was also a lot of settle
humor and jokes. It used a lot of literary elements like foreshadowing and a
lot of metaphors. I thoroughly enjoyed
the book and would definitely use it in a classroom of upper middle school.
